About this game

There are certain games that, from the moment they're announced, just feel different. Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is one of those games. The premise alone is enough to turn heads - Captain America and Black Panther, set against the brutal backdrop of World War II, going up against one of Marvel's most iconic villainous organisations. I genuinely cannot wait for this one, and the more details that emerge, the more excited I get. The game was first jointly announced by Skydance and Marvel Games back in October 2021, which means it's been quietly building anticipation for years now. It's being developed by Skydance Games, a studio led by Amy Hennig - best known as the creator and writer behind the Uncharted series. That name alone should tell you everything about the kind of experience they're going for. Hennig has spent her career crafting cinematic, character-driven adventures, and bringing that same energy to the Marvel universe feels like an inspired match. The story centres on Captain America and Azzuri - the Black Panther of the 1940s - who must overcome their differences and form an uneasy alliance to confront a common enemy. Fighting alongside them are Gabriel Jones of the Howling Commandos and Nanali, a Wakandan spy embedded in Occupied Paris, as the group works together to stop a sinister plot that threatens to weaponise the chaos of World War II for the ultimate rise of Hydra. That's a genuinely compelling setup. The idea of a wartime alliance between a super-soldier from Brooklyn and a Wakandan king, navigating distrust while the world burns around them, has real dramatic weight to it - and it's a side of Marvel storytelling we rarely see explored in games. The game is built on Unreal Engine 5 and is described as a mission-based, narrative-driven experience rather than a traditional open-world design - which, honestly, suits the material perfectly. Not every superhero game needs to be a sprawling sandbox. Sometimes a tight, focused story is exactly what's called for. On the release front, it's been a bumpy road. The game won't be launching in 2026, with Paramount Games Studio confirming it's now targeting 2027 at the earliest. However, they did confirm the game is already playable and still in active development, which is reassuring. The prolonged development cycle doesn't mean the project is in danger of cancellation - it just means the team is taking the time to get it right. And honestly? After seeing what rushed superhero games can look like, I'd rather they take the time. The combination of a gifted storyteller in Amy Hennig, a genuinely original WWII Marvel setting, and a four-person ensemble with real narrative chemistry makes this one of the most interesting games on the horizon. I can't wait.
